FLCC Topples Corning 71-52, Extends its Win Streak to Five Games
CANANDAIGUA – The Lady Lakers – this afternoon – opened up an early 11-0 lead at home over Corning CC and after doing so – never looked back as they went on to defeat the Lady Red Barons in wire-to-wire fashion by a score of 71-52. The MSAC matchup – which marked the second time Finger Lakes CC and the visiting Lady Red Barons have met this season – consisted of a hard-fought battle between both sides despite the outcome.
The Lady Lakers – in their other meeting with Corning – defeated the Lady Red Barons on the road back on 1/17. Finger Lakes – who is now in the midst of a five-game win streak – stands at 14-10 overall and is 9-1 in the MSAC. Since the calendar flipped to 2013 – the Lady Lakers are 11-1.
Leading the charge offensively for Finger Lakes was Kelli McCauley. On the afternoon – the sophomore guard – who was 8-17 from the floor – dropped in a game-high 23 points in 28 minutes. Following McCauley in the scoring department for the hosts with 17 points and 13 points respectively were Casi Strait and Kelly Broderick. Broderick – who delivered her points coming off of the bench – was 5-9 from the field and 3-6 from three-point land.
Finger Lakes – behind 16 first half points out of McCauley – built itself a 42-21-halftime lead. The Lady Lakers – who shot 39% from the hardwood for the game – made 47% of their field goal attempts from the floor in the first half. Corning – outcome aside – showed great resiliency in the second half. Over the duration of the final 20 minutes of today's game – the Lady Red Barons – who courted a roster of six players – outscored Finger Lakes – 31-29.
Marissa Pike – Corning's top scorer – led the visitors in the scoring portion of the box score. The freshman guard – who remained on the court for all 40 minutes of the game – delivered a team-high 20 points. Following her in the scoring department for Corning with 11 points and 10 points respectively were Mollie Peck and Taylor Lathrop.
The turnover category plagued the Lady Red Barons in both half's. Overall – they coughed up the ball 33 times versus FLCC's 16 turnovers. The Lady Lakers – defensively – registered 23 steals as a team. 7 of FLCC's 8 players recorded 2 or more steals. Leading the way in the steals column for the Lady Lakers with a game-high 5 thefts was forward Jordan Smith. Julia Pagano and Casey Dean each contributed 4 steals apiece for the hosts.
Finger Lakes – collectively – did an excellent job of sharing the ball on Saturday. Led by Pagano's game-high 7 assists – the Lady Lakers tallied 18 dimes as a squad.
Credit Corning for out-rebounding Finger Lakes. The Lady Red Barons – who collected 41 boards as a team versus the Lady Lakers 30 – was led on the glass by Sarah Dickson's game-high 14 rebounds. Following Dickson with 10 rebounds for the visitors was Peck. Peck – who finished the day with 11 points and 10 rebounds – registered the games' loan double-double.
As for Finger Lakes – they were led on the glass by Smith's team-high 9 rebounds. Strait – to go along with her 17 points and 5 assists – added 6 boards in 37 minutes.
The Lady Lakers – with just 3 games remaining on their 2012-13 regular season schedule – will host conference foes Cayuga CC in their next contest – which is slated to take place next Wednesday (2/13) at Putt Moore Court starting at 6:00 p.m.
