Jack and Jill Wins Conclave Title
HANOVER, NH -- The FLCC Jack and Jill Team won the 69th Northeast Collegiate Woodsmen Conclave held at Dartmouth College on April 24-25. Twelve colleges and universities representing 31 teams competed in three divisions (Men, Women, and Jack and Jill) for bragging rights to be the best collegiate team in the Northeast Division. FLCC fielded 2 teams, one in each of Men and Jack and Jill Divisions.
The FLCC Jack and Jill team won a commanding first place earning 1623 points out of a potential 1900, and 175 points ahead of 2nd place Alfred State, and 251 points ahead of Paul Smiths. The FLCC Jack and Jill Team is comprised of three men and three women: Mary Benincasa (Canandaigua) Brandon Graves (Victor), Jake Habecker (Palmyra), Ben Minkau (Sodus), Alexis Hallstead (Owego), and Cecelia Frey (Pittsford). They won eight of the 19 events including: singles canoeing, doubles canoeing, portage canoeing, singles flycasting, singles birling, team crosscut, team bowsaw, and triples horizontal chopping.
“I am ecstatic and thrilled for these student athletes! It is the first time we have brought this trophy home to FLCC since the division has been formalized several years ago. It is awesome to get FLCC names on that trophy” said Coach Ryan Staychock.
A dominant Paul Smith Men’s team won their division, just 66.5 points ahead of Alfred State, followed by a strong 3rd place showing by Unity College, who claims FLCC 2-time Men’s Division Champion, transfer student and recent Alumni, Matt Baird (2014) as their anchor. The FLCC Men’s Team placed 8th, with notable showings by CJ Kouzan (Webster) and John Babcock (Bloomfield) winning their Doubles Canoeing event.
Next on the Woodsmen schedule is the FLCC Logging Sports Competition on Saturday October 3rd, an an annual event held on the main campus. Alfred State will be hosting the 70th Northeast Collegiate Woodsmen Conclave in late April 2015.
