CANANDAIGUA -- The Finger Lakes Women's Soccer Team fell to Broome Community College on Wednesday by the score of 1-0. The Hornets entered the game ranked 6th in the NJCAA while the Lakers were ranked 9th. It was the season opening game for both teams.
The Lakers got off to an early start pressuring the Hornets. They were able to put multiple shots on net in the opening minutes, but all attempts were stopped by Hornets keeper Ariel Roys. The game was a back and forth affair for the opening half hour as teams would trade chances. Freshman Daniele Ogrodowski matched her counterpart by stopping all opening attempts by the Hornets.
Broome would get the games lone tally in the 34rd minute. Danielle Tyrell, who led the Hornets in goals in 2012, took a long pass down the middle of the field and would beat the Laker defenders before finishing it into the left side of the net.
The Lakers fought to get back into the game, but most attempts in the second half came on the counter attack as Broome held possession for most of the half. They would outshot Finger Lakes in the second half 13-6 and have a 3-0 margin in corner kicks.
Ogrodowski did her best to keep the Lakers close. In total, she recorded 12 saves in her first collegiate game. Freshmen McKenzie Miller and Brittany Maggio led the Lakers offense with 4 and 3 shots respectively. Alyssa Norman and Jess Blondell both had solid games on defense and worked well to start many of the Laker attacks.
Finger Lakes will return to action this weekend at Mohawk Valley Community College in Utica, NY. They will be playing in a Labor Day tournament. The Lakers will take on Brookdale CC (NJ) on Saturday and ASA College (New York City) on Sunday.
