Men's Volleyball Earns a Sweep in Season Opener

BROCKPORT, N.Y. - The Finger Lakes Community College men's volleyball team kicked off their season with a win Tuesday night in a 3-0 sweep over the host SUNY Brockport Golden Eagles club team. First-year head coach Steven Verbridge commented on his team's performance, "It was a good first game for our team. We showed some nerves early on, but we were able to settle in and play our version of volleyball" Verbridge went on to add, "I thought we passed well and showed some glimpses on offense...Overall it was a good first match, now we are looking forward to the Monroe College Invite this weekend".

Against the Golden Eagles, sophomore Daniel Seymour (Bellmore, N.Y./John F. Kennedy) emerged as the standout player, delivering 6 kills on a .500 hitting percentage, alongside 2 block assists; good for 7 points. Classmates Ian Meeks (Victor, N.Y./Victor) and Nick Ferris (Canandaigua, N.Y./Canandaigua) bolstered the team's performance, each adding 8 kills. Meeks would go on to add 3 block assists, while Ferris boasted a .500 hitting percentage and a strong presence on defense with a block solo and block assist.

Sophomore Samuel Guardado (San Salvador, El Salvador/Josue Christian) netted 3 services aces in the game, while freshman Bryce Nickson (Penfield, N.Y./Penfield) added 5 kills and a block assist to his tally. Helping to set up the Lakers' offense was sophomore Bryce Ceravolo (Canandaigua, N.Y./Canandaigua) who piled up 28 assists on the night. Ceravolo added a service ace, 4 digs, a block solo, and 3 block assists to round out an impressive overall performance.

Shoring up the Lakers' defense were teammates Bryce Nickson and AJ DeBalso (Canandaigua, N.Y./Canandaigua) who finished with 8 and 6 digs, respectively. Now, the Lakers will look ahead to a 4-day road trip, starting in New Rochelle, N.Y. for the Monroe College Invitational and ending at Nassau Community College. The Lakers will play against some of the top teams in the country, including a NJCAA National Title game rematch against the Monroe College Mustangs on Saturday, February 3rd at 10:30 AM.
