Preseason Preview: Softball
CANANDAIGUA, N.Y. – The Finger Lakes Community College Softball team is prepared to reach new heights under newly appointed Head Coach Julianna Sherman and Assistant Coach Maddy Joseph.
Sherman joins the Lakers after a successful career in high school and college as an all-round utility player. Sherman enters with coaching experience at the high school and collegiate level. Joseph joins the Lakers after a successful Fall season with the Women's Volleyball team, along with her own experience at the plate as a former student-athlete for the Lakers and Nazareth Golden Flyers.
The Lakers have a large returning class, with starting Pitchers Kalyska Payne and Reagan Seelye returning to the mound. Also returning for the Lakers is Catcher Caitlynne Marczyk, Utility Player Deanna Palmer and Infielders Clare Kingsfield and Megan Lee. Payne returns to the mound after making 23 appearances for the Lakers in 2021, pitching a total of 88 innnings, while Seelye appeared in 15 games with 63 innining pitched. For hitting, in 2021 Marczyk earned 4 RBIs, Palmer went for 3 HRs and 14 RBIs; good for a batting average of .271. Kingsfield earned 9 RBIs with a batting average of .324, while Lee earned 5 RBIs.
The Lakers will rely on some of their 1st-year players in Peyton Cory, Hannah Hoffman and Skyllar Weigert, to mesh with the returning Sophomore class. As a team, the Lakers will look to build on offense in order to continue to produce runs on a consistent basis.
In Mid-State Athletic Conference play the Lakers look to finish over .500, as well as improve their record at the regional level from last season. With a coaching change in the middle of the semester, the Lakers are described as a "resilient group", adapting to that change and working hard to reach their goals as a team.
The Lakers kickoff their season on the road against Penn State Mont Alto on March 19th and Ocean City College on March 21st. The Lakers will return home on March 26th in an anticipated matchup with the Jayhawks of Jamestown Community College. Overall, under their new coaching staff, the Lakers will look to make a statement this season in the Conference and Regional level.
